Hotel Review: Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel and Spa

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be offered a stay at the 4* Mercure Holland House Hotel and spa in Cardiff. As part of our stay I was kindly enough offered a hotel package consisting of Bed & Breakfast, Dinner and Spa use and treatments.  The hotel is situated close to the city centre, so you have the option of staying and making use of the wonderful spa facilities or venturing out to do some shopping etc.

Once we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted by a lovely lady at the front desk who took our booking info and directed us to our room. Upon entering our room we were really impressed, we were located on 11th floor  so the views were amazing, you could see the city centre from where we were.

Our room was well decorated, bright and spacious.  The room came with a very comfortable and very large bed in it, that could easily have fit me, my friend and others in it if needed. We had our own bathroom which had a a bath and shower in it, and there was loads of little toiletries which was a lovely added little touch. The room also came with a little desk area, a seating area and a flat screen TV which was on the wall.

That at evening once we had unpacked, we decided to head down to the restaurant for Dinner. The restaurant is based on the 1st floor of the hotel. Breakfast is served from 7am to 10am and Dinner is served 6pm until 10pm. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, with plenty of tables and situated by large bay windows which makes for a lovely setting.

The staff in the restaurant were lovely and couldn’t do enough for us and the rest of the customers in there. The menu offered a variety of different choices from small bites, to steaks, to sandwiches. I was starving as hadn’t really had a chance to eat all day due to travelling, so I ordered some olives as a starter and then for my main Tiger Prawn Lingurini, my friend had exactly the same.

The wait for our food wasn’t that long at all to be honest, considering it was at peak time when we went, when the food was brought over it was really well presented. The food itself was delicious, beautifully cooked there was lots of little added spices and flavours which really made the meals that extra bit special.

After our meal we decided to head into Cardiff City Centre for a few drinks and to do some exploring. When we returned it was still fairly early so we decided to head into the bar for a few drinks. Early on in the evening we had to walk through the bar area to get to the restaurant and hadn’t taken much note until now of just how beautiful the bar area was. It was so unique in how it was decorated and had such a nice atmosphere.

The room was really well lit and there was a variety of different seating areas from comfortable sofas to tables and chairs to suit everyone’s needs.  It was the perfect setting to just sit and enjoy a quiet drink and relax with my friend and of course we choose the sofa area to sit on. The drinks id say were reasonably priced and no more than you’d expect to pay for anywhere else like this and again the staff were just as lovely and welcoming as they’d been in all other parts of the hotel.

The next morning we were happy to wake knowing that downstairs was a lovely breakfast buffet waiting for us. We went in and were over whelmed by the selection of food and drinks on offer. Food wise There was a variety of choices from  pastries, cereals, yogurts, fruit, cooked breakfast and you could even pick things off there selected breakfast menu to have cooked for you. Drink wise there was teas, coffees, juices even tiny Actimels, it really was more than you could ask for.
After breakfast we decided to make use of the Spa facilities, the hotel had nicely provided us with complimentary robes and slippers as part of our stay. The spa area was really nice, warm and clean. The only downside was that the Jacuzzi bubbles weren’t working during our stay but it kind of made it like you were sitting in a big hot bath which was still very nice. In the pool area there is a Sauna, a pool, a Steam room and a Jacuzzi, as well as a gym and treatment rooms which are situated just outside the pool area. It was fairly quiet when we used the facilities and to be honest i never noticed it to be overly busy whilst we stayed, which we personally liked. We spent a fair bit of our day in the spa area relaxing and then decided to head into town for a bite to eat and a few drinks. We had massages booked in the spa for the next day before we were due to leave so didn’t want to have to much of a late one.

On our final morning of our stay, we were pretty sad to be leaving we’d had such a lovely stay and didn’t want to go home. We were excited to be having our Aromatherapy massages in the spa just before we did leave thou. When we turn’t up to our appointments were were greeted by the therapists and taken into a lovely relaxation room where we could relax and enjoy a drink before taken in for our treatments. The relaxation room was wonderful, mood lighting and lounge chairs/beds accompanied by relaxing music. I could of easily fallen asleep in there.
The treatment itself was lovely, I’d never actually had a massage before so I wasn’t really sure what to expect, however both me and the therapist agreed that I definitely would benefit from having them more often. The therapist who did mine was really lovely she helped me to feel at ease thru out my treatment and kept asking me if the pressure was okay and making sure i was relaxed. The oils and lotions that they used smelt amazing too.  After my treatment I was taken back into the relaxation room and advised to drink plenty of water after which again they provided. After a while we decided to spend our last hour to make use of the wonderful spa facilities again before heading home.
Overall we had a truly wonderful stay. The hotel was stunning and the staff were so welcoming. Whether its for a spa weekend, or if you just need somewhere to stay where you see some local sites. I’d definitely 100% recommend this Hotel and hope to be able to return again in the future.

Disclosure: I was offered a 2 night stay with some lovely added extras at the Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel and Spa in exchange for a honest review.

In the past I stayed in mecure hotels but they have certainly improved! Wow it looks lovely there I must say – this post might have changed my opinion on them as my room was basic with paper thin walls. They must have invested x http://www.caringinthechaos.com
